Universal priesthood of believers
All believers share spiritual dignity and access to God in Christ.
What it is: The universal priesthood of believers affirms that all the faithful have access to God through Christ and participate in the spiritual vocation of the Church.
How the religion understands it: The belief does not necessarily eliminate ordained ministries, but reduces the idea of a priestly elite with indispensable mediation for access to God. It strengthens lay participation, Bible reading, and the spiritual responsibility of the community.
Context: The principle was very influential in the Protestant critique of hierarchical models considered excessive.
